A Sad Day for the Scottish Data Centre Industry

It was announced today that the juggernaut that is Pulsant has acquired that venerable Scottish Data Centre institution, ScoLocate in an alleged £26 million deal.

Pulsant who are backed by Bridgepoint Development Capital started their buying blitzkrieg with Lumison Ltd, of whom I was an employee, about two years ago, swiftly adding Bluesquare Data then Dedipower to their portfolio. Within a matter of weeks the management of the organisation had been moved to Reading, and to be frank, the heart ripped out of Lumison, a once proud Scottish company.

Following a financial restructuring a couple of years ago, Scolocate were pretty much owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland, whom, as Data Centres were obviously not part of their core business, were eager to sell.

There is obviously money to be made in Data Centres, collocation, managed hosting etc. as it seems that these facilitiess are now being snapped up by people solely interested in short term ownership with sell on profit at the end of the period, and managed by people who have no feel for the industry, or the people who work their.

Whilst all press releases state that the 26 or so people who are employed by Scolocate, which incidentally was another of my jobs from 2000 to 2005, are safe, I somehow sadly doubt that. I fervently hope that they don't rip the heart and soul out of Scolocate too.

That appears only to leave Iomart and to a lesser extent, Brightsolid (formerly Scotland Online) as the last of the true Scottish Data Centres.

What Next

Well, as reported in my last post, Pulsant and I are no more. Am I missing it....Not a Jot!!

It has only been a couple of days but just going to bed without my cell phone is a bonus on it's own. No more middle of the night calls for me, at least for a while anyway.

Currently, I am catching up on some house projects which have been booting about for a while, but also talking to a number of people about opportunities as we go.

One of the more exciting concepts is working with Levant UPS who are a fairly new to market concern headed up by Mark Parma. Originally started as a maintenance organisation specialising in MGE devices, they have branched out into build and delivery of cost effective units, which once they are known in the market place, should hopefully give at least Riello and Borri a run for there money.

I am working an initial marketing plan for them at the moment and will keep you posted as to progress.

So Long and Thanks For All the Pish. Pulsant - Welcome Back Kirlaur Ltd

Dateline 21st September 2012

Unlucky for some. Or is it. After four years of blood, sweat and tears for originally Lumison and after acquisition by some financial house, Pulsant, it is time to move on.

All good things do come to an end and indeed this started happening for me after we were acquired by a Development Capital organisation, and the Executive Board were replaced from outside.

Kirlaur Ltd, my Consulting Company is back in business and I am now currently looking for freelance opportunities in the Data Centre arena.
